Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Do I need prior soldering experience?
A: Prior experience is not necessary since our instruction manual explains everything in perfect detail and includes photographs of every step, so anyone can build it. However, please just bear in mind that the kit includes some surface mounted components that are very small and can be challenging to work with—especially the SMD MCU chip which has pins that are spaced less than 0.5 mm apart, so a steady hand and good soldering technique will be required. Take a look at the image gallery to see all components included in this kit.
Q: Does it come with a power supply?
A: A power cable is included, but it requires a standard 5V DC USB power supply—e.g.: a PC/laptop USB port, a phone charger, a power bank, etc.
Q: Can I integrate this with other gadgets, such as a doorbell or motion detection camera, so it will flash when triggered?
A: Yes! The kit runs on 5V DC power, so it can be triggered by other devices that can safely provide 5V. The simplest method is using a relay or switch from your control circuit to turn the kit on when the gadget is activated.

SOLDERING IRON & WIRE BUNDLE
Of course, you only need to buy the tools once; you'll use them again and again for your future electronics projects!
Some components are quite small so a tweezers is required for manipulating them. You possibly already have a tweezers at home, but if not, we sell them here: ESD Tweezers.
While not essential (assuming your solder wire includes sufficient rosin), we also recommend soldering flux for working with the SMD components. We also sell this here: Soldering/welding flux.

Wow, bought this for our 13 year old but, after reading the instructions and looking at some of the SMD components, I quickly realised that it was not within their ability. Not going to lie, this is a challenging build. SMD micro-controller, an SMD capacitor and two SMD resistors are the most chalnging bits. Some of them are as small as a grain of rice. Just don’t breathe when you are getting them out of the packet! So tricky!
Additionally, soldering in 58 LEDs to the correct polarity is very changing - the volume of them, as well has keeping the heat contact time to a minimum so as not to burn out the sensitive components.
On initial firing up after the soldering. Some of the LEDs were not lighting up. However, I trouble-sooted this to the micro-controller and NOT the LEDs. I think I had bad contacts on some of the chip legs and possible a short on some others - all stemming from me trying to minimise the heat contact time. They can actually take more heat than you think.
To give some perspective about the small SMD components, I was using my finest soldering iron tip, and it was still twice the size of the end of some of the SMD capacitor and resistors. I was also using fine leaded solder and that looked giant next to the SMDs.
I did this without paste flux and it probably would have been easier with the flux, as described in the instructions. I just didn’t have any. I used RMA liquid flux as that is all I had.
Now fully working.
Very very challenging!
Hi David, thank you for taking the time to leave this detailed review, we really appreciate it! Definitely one of the trickier kits, we're impressed that you were able to trace the fault in the circuit and effectively resolve it. If you're interested in any of the other kits for your 13 year old, feel free to reach out to customer services on info@thesciencehut.com - they'll be happy to make some suggestions of kits that would be suitable for him.
Had great difficulty with the tiny SMD components, so will be unable to complete the kit for Hallowe'en this year. But full marks to the Science Hut for their offers of help when I got in touch with them. Thanks guys, I'll be back!
Hello John, thank you for taking the time to leave a detailed review, we really appreciate all feedback, whether positive or not so positive. This kit is by far the among most challenging kits to assemble using conventional soldering tools—as you rightly point out, even our video shows how difficult it can be. We deliberately used this video to illustrate the difficulty as we didn't want people to underestimate the challenge with the SMD components—has we used a video of a seamless install, it might convey to viewers that it's easy, when in fact it's not. That said, many customers have successfully built the kit and are delighted with the results. We'd love to help you getting your kit working, if you'd like to just send an email to info@thesciencehut.com with photos showing all your soldering steps (front and back of the PCB)—you mention you have a magnification device already, so if you could take some photos of the SMD soldering through that also. Please also let us know if you're seeing anything when you turn it on, or if nothing happens at all, and let us know if you own a digital multimeter. Our technical team will be more than happy to review them and provide you with suggestions to get your kit working.
This is a fantastic kit. Great introduction to soldering SMD components. Definitely recommend that you get some solder flux, especially for the MCU. Looks fantastic, very bright and the red eyes are very piercing. Effects can be adjusted too using the various controls. All things considered, this is a great kit and will take pride of place on the mantle piece in my sitting room this Halloween!
Hello Dennis, thank you for taking the time to write this detailed and informative review, we really appreciate it. Glad you like the kit and delighted to hear it will be centerpiece for your Halloween decorations this year. We agree about the use of flux. Our instruction manual does cover this in great detail, and provides tips on how to solder the components without flux for those who don't have any available. That said, it can be readily purchased from most DIY stores, and we also sell a large 50g tub of high-quality flux on our site for a low price.
Nice Electronics Kit, quality components
Cool skull, very bright LEDs. Easy to make
