Q: What is desoldering braid used for?
A: Copper desoldering braid, also known as solder wick, is used to remove excess solder from PCBs, circuit boards, solder joints and electronic components during repairs or rework.

Q: How do you use copper desoldering wick?
A: Place the desoldering wick over the solder you want to remove, then press a heated soldering iron onto the braid. The molten solder is drawn into the copper wick. There's a short video in the Links and References section below that shows how to use it.

Q: Does this desoldering braid include flux?
A: No, this desoldering braid does not include flux. This makes it more versatile for use across multiple applications and makes it safer to use, since it doesn't produce flux smoke. Fluxed desoldering braid generally absorbs solder more quickly and easily because the flux improves solder flow and wetting. It is particularly useful for beginners. However, fluxed desoldering braid can leave flux residue on PCBs that may require clean-up afterwards. You may add your own flux to this desoldering braid during use, if desired.

Q: What size desoldering wick should I use?
A: Choose the braid width according to the size of the solder joint. Narrow copper solder wick is ideal for small PCB pads (especially for cleaning up SMD pads) and electronic components, while wider braid is better for larger solder joints (e.g.: removal of IC sockets and components with multiple connections, such as 7-segment LED display blocks). However, any size will work for almost any desoldering application.

Q: How far does this desoldering braid go?
A: Very little is used for each joint desoldered or cleaned up. Using a 28 pin IC socket as an example, approx 3cm of braid (at the 2mm size) is sufficient to desolder the component.
