Learning Outcomes and Benefits
Learning Outcomes and Benefits
Building the Handheld Game Electronics Kit is more than just fun — it’s a complete STEM learning experience. Find out about some of the things that can be learned from assembling this kit below.
Understand Electronic Circuits: Learn how voltage, current, and resistance work together to make your handheld game come to life.
Component Recognition: Identify and understand resistors, capacitors, transistors, LEDs, buzzers, push buttons, and integrated circuits — the same types of building blocks used in real-world electronics.
Microcontrollers and Firmware: Discover how the pre-programmed STC microcontroller acts as the “brain” of the system, running the game code, receiving user inputs from the button presses, and controlling the LED matrix display and the numerical display.
LED Dot Matrix Displays: Explore how pixels light up on the 16x8 LED display to create movement in games like Tetris and Snake.
Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs): Learn how a PCB organizes and connects components efficiently to keep devices compact and free from interference, just like in smartphones and other compact electronics.
Polarity Awareness: Understand why some components (like electrolytic capacitors and LEDs) must be placed in the correct orientation for the circuit to work.
Hands-On Soldering: Gain practical soldering experience with through-hole components, a skill that opens the door to more advanced electronics projects.
Troubleshooting Skills: Develop problem-solving abilities as you check for solder bridges, loose connections, or incorrect placement of components. Learn about the attention to detail required for precise engineering.
STEM Confidence: The clear acrylic case lets you see every part of your build, so you can proudly explain how the hardware works to friends, family, or classmates (making it ideal for 'show-and-tell'). You'll gain all this knowledge from our detailed instruction manual.
Foundation for Arduino Projects: Get an introduction to Arduino-type microcontrollers and how custom programming could expand projects beyond pre-loaded games. If you're interested in getting into Arduino but not quite ready for the coding challenge, this kit is a great place to start!
This kit gives learners a strong STEM foundation while providing the reward of a fully working handheld game console they built themselves.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Do I need to write code or program the device?
A: No programming is required. The microcontroller comes pre-programmed with firmware that runs four classic games (Tetris, Snake, Racing, and Space Invaders). You only need to assemble the hardware, power it on, and play.
Q: Can this kit help me learn about Arduino and microcontrollers?
A: Yes. The CPU is Arduino-type, meaning it works in a similar way to popular Arduino boards. While you don’t need to code for this kit, it gives you an introduction to how programmable microcontrollers are used in electronics projects. Along with the microcontroller, many other components in the kit, such as the displays and buttons, are widely used in Arduino projects.
Q: Will this kit help my child's school education?
A: Absolutely! In most countries school curricula, kids start to learn about Science in high school, which includes Electronics. Generally speaking, kids that have built this kit (or any of the other electronics kits on our site) will have a significant headstart when it comes to learning electronics over kids who have never assembled an electronics kit.
Q: How is the device powered?
A: The handheld game is powered by USB (cable included). It works with a phone charger, laptop, PC, or power bank. Experienced makers can easily adapt the device to use alternative power sources, if desired. Our technical team can provide guidance if you would like to know more—just Contact Us.
Q: Can I change the code on the MCU to create my own games?
A: Yes, but while technically feasible, it's outside the scope of our instruction manual. Those with advanced knowledge in Arduino coding, hardware and who have the required data transfer tools can reprogram the MCU to create their own games. Please note that due to the complexity and tools required, our Technical team cannot support requests for instructions on how to do this. However, there is a lot of information on how to reprogram MCUs freely available on the Arduino website.

Jasna navodila.
Živjo Aleš. Hvala, da ste si vzeli čas za oddajo mnenja, to zelo cenimo. Veseli smo, da ste bili zadovoljni z nakupovalno izkušnjo in z navodili za uporabo.
(Hi Aleš. Thank you for taking the time to leave a review, we really appreciate it. Glad you were happy with your shopping experience and with the instruction manual.)
This kit went together very nicely good instructions and good quality components and board. The only issue I had was that the board was too long to go in the nice acrylic case, and I had to leave the end pieces out of the case to assemble it. Another improvement might be a volume control pot. It’s quite loud to play.
Hi Emma, thank you very much for taking the time to leave this review, we really appreciate it. Can you send us a photo of what you describe with the case, perhaps it's just an alignment thing that we can help you to resolve over email? Just send to info@thesciencehut.com and we'll get back to you. Good suggestion with the potentiometer for volume control, I have passed onto Technical for their consideration. Step 8.4 of the instruction manual shows how to control the volume, but it may just be to turn it on or off, rather than adjust the volume; I've asked Technical to clarify that too and will let you know if it's possible to adjust the volume in its current configuration.
I bought this for my 13 year old, along with a soldering iron kit, for Christmas. We've just spent a couple of focused time together building it. An excellent project to do together. Especially if you don't mind your child ending the day better at soldering than you are!
Hi Ioan , thank you for taking the time to leave this review, we really appreciate it! Delighted to hear how you've built this kit with your teenager, and we agree, it's a fantastic way to spend quality time together, learning and having fun at the same time, and great sense of accomplishment when you complete the build to find everything is working :) Hopefully the experience has helped to ignite a spark of innovation and creativity for your kid!
Kits are well done. I’ve enjoyed putting them together. Some instructions need improvement.
Hi Paul, thank you so much for taking the time to leave this review, we really appreciate it and glad to hear that you enjoyed putting your kits together. I'm not sure if you used our detailed instruction manuals which can be downloaded from the product pages for each kit? We realise now that not everyone knows to go there to obtain the manuals, so we recently set up an automation to email the instruction manual to the customer immediately after purchasing the kit. We're also very happy to offer instructions or technical support via email - info@thesciencehut.com - thanks again for taking the time out of your day today to leave a review!
Purchased as a gift, looks great, so hopefully it is OK.
