Scientific principles illustrated
Scientific principles illustrated
Building and experimenting with this 24-Hour Digital Clock Kit offers a hands-on learning experience in various scientific principles and skills. Here are some of the key scientific principles and skills that can be gained from working with this kit:
Scientific Principles
Electronic Circuit Theory: Understand how electronic components like resistors, capacitors, and integrated circuits (ICs) work together to perform specific functions, such as counting seconds, minutes, and hours. Examine the printed circuit board (PCB) to gain an understanding into how components are strategically placed to ensure devices as small as possible without interference between components or current channels. Learn about modular construction of electronic devices.
Frequency Division: Learn how a high-frequency signal can be divided down to a precise 1 Hz signal using a series of binary frequency dividers. This principle is crucial for generating accurate time signals.
Oscillation: Delve into how oscillators work, using a crystal oscillator as a stable time base, and explore the role of external components in setting the oscillation frequency.
Multiplexing and Decoding: Explore how BCD (Binary-Coded Decimal) to 7-segment decoders work to display numbers on digital displays, an essential concept for digital readouts.
Skills Development
Soldering and Circuit Assembly: Develop fine motor skills and learn the art of soldering electronic components to create functional circuits, an invaluable skill in electronics.
Problem-Solving: Enhance your ability to troubleshoot and solve problems as you work through the assembly process and ensure the clock functions correctly.
Critical Thinking: Engage in critical thinking as you follow circuit diagrams and understand how each component contributes to the clock's functionality.
Attention to Detail: Cultivate a keen eye for detail required in electronic projects, from placing components correctly to understanding the flow of current through the circuit.
Through the construction and operation of this 24-Hour Digital Clock Electronics STEM Kit, learners not only gain a tangible understanding of these principles and skills but also experience the satisfaction of building a device that interacts with the fundamental concept of time. This project serves as an excellent stepping stone into the broader world of electronics and timekeeping technology.
The Digital Clock Kit is a good-looking finished product. You should not attempt this kit unless you are fairly proficient at soldering or have lots of time. As the Hut warns, there are nearly 400 solder joints you must make. There are a couple of other warnings I would give: be very careful straightening bent pins on either the sockets or the ICs – they are fragile (a small pair of needlenose pliers is helpful here); look up a how-to on inserting ICs into sockets – you can’t just shove them in, the pins must be realigned beforehand and this takes considerable care.
Once assembled, if you choose to run off battery power, be aware that three AA cells will only last about a week. After that length of time, my clock stopped updating the hours and the LED colons went off, but replacing the batteries restored everything to working order. In view of this I recommend using a phone charger to power your clock. Just be sure to check the voltage first.
Finally, the clock is reasonably accurate. Mine gains less than 40 seconds a day. Yours may perform differently – there are many factors that can cause small errors.
I am happy with my purchase. Oh, and for you USA customers, it clearly says that this is a 24-hour clock on the Hut website, so don’t say you weren’t warned. I’m an amateur radio operator, so that suits me fine. I have it set on UTC.
Hi Paul, many thanks for another very fair, very balanced and very detailed reviewed packed full of advice and recommendations for other people considering this product, we really appreciate it! I have asked Technical to take a look at the battery longevity since a week doesn't seem very long, but perhaps it's due to the brightness of the display. If needed, we could potentially look at a modification to reduce brightness to extend battery life without taking too much away from the aesthetics of the final device. That said, your suggestion of using a phone charger is probably the best option, negating the need for batteries altogether and fairly straightforward to accomplish using an inexpensive USB cable.
The order process was easy, the shipping was good, and so were the online instructions. The board layout made it easy to get things right. I'd highly recommend this kit, and The Science Hut.
I made a couple of small changes... mainly, I didn't want all the brightness that the clock can give, so I used 2200 ohm resistors for r1 - r42. It's next to me on my desk and keeping good time.
Hi Steve, thanks so much for taking the time to write this review, we really appreciate it! Very happy to hear that you were pleased with your experience of shopping with us and thank you for the recommendation. Intrigued at how you substituted some of the components to achieve your own desired effect - really useful info to share for anyone else that would like to try to accomplish the same thing!
This kit was a very well laid out design. If you're a first time builder I would recommend that you have some help from someone who has done through hole type soldering, but it is an easy kit to build right the first time. All the parts are easy to see and handle; if you take your time and follow the directions you will end up with a clock that is bright, entertaining, and amazingly quite accurate.
Once you have built it and learned the soldering skills needed you will want to build more ... and it will be a great project for adding to the lessons in digital electronics in action. The board is easy to read, and the assembly is done in a very good orderly manner.
I recommend that you use an egg crate or some type of basin to hold the parts in while building; this way you ca not only do a complete inventory of the kit, but also a way of organizing the parts in a manner that make assembly much easier and more accurate.
Hi Michael, thank you so much for taking the time to leave this detailed review, we really appreciate it. Delighed you enjoyed building your clock, and it does look great! Some good tips and advice you've suggested for our readers there too on organising components, since they are so small, they can be easily lost if just left on a table top or work surface, so your suggestion would certainly help to reduce that hazard.
It had been many years since I did a project like this (Heathkit) but it was fun. Had to admit my soldering was rusty. The kit was complete and the instructions well written and understandable. The few questions I had were answered promptly by email. Overall I would rate it a 5 star project.
Hi Richard, thank you so much for taking the time to leave this review, we really appreciate it. Having a look back through emails here, I can see you had some questions relating to one of the digits not displaying correctly, and our technical team shared some suggestions for you to fix that issue... I can see from your photo that you got that fixed (well done, as troubleshooting is certainly the most challenging part of assembling electronics kits). Just curious, did you manage to get it sorted based on the advice you received from our technical team? Glad that you enjoyed building your clock and I can see that you've found a nice spot to have it on display :)
